Entries for Nov 2013

That thing where the venue tells you to post about a gig, but then doesn't post about it itself.

Anyway. Had an amazing time with Sam Andreae & Seth Bennett on Thursday in Liverpool!

This month the trio with Dave Kane & Joshua Blackmore is five years old! Catch us at Vortex Jazz Club on the 7th:

2nd day of Diwali: offerings to Hanuman! So a free track today -

Arrived at Vortex Jazz Club and tired already. Anyone near Dalston?

Such a lovely time tonight at Vortex Jazz Club. Open living music! @[JoshuaBlackmore], Dave Kane and I had a blast.

"Schooling's one of the most wonderful things there's ever been" ~ Charlie Parker.

Don't forget—Chris Biscoe, Roger Turner and I play at Voicebox Arts Centre: https://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/gig/general-1385580600

It'll be my last Derby gig for a while, I think.

I think I need to take some time and rekindle the desire to play at home again...

...although I've always strived to put on interesting things, it hasn't always worked out: it's a struggle. Definitely worth it! But hard.

It certainly means the trio won't play in Derby this year, which is a pity.

The question for me really is: when will the trio get to Derby for a gig?

I use 2ndline and One Note Sunday to bring new music to Derby, but have an internal policy of not programming myself.

But if I didn't put on my gigs with my groups, I would play in Derby hardly at all: perhaps twice a year.

So, a recharge of the batteries is in order. I'd very much like to play at home more often!

Anyway. Today is e-mail/person/essay catch-up day. Again.

Is it too early in the morning to transcribe Tristano?

Contrafact 1, from the gig on Thursday.

Fascinating thoughts on improvised music from William Parker:

In London Jazz Festival twice this year! with Rachel Musson on Tue 19th, and Sonsale on the 24th: https://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/gigs

Here's a simple jazz question that I'm having trouble with: who wrote Ornithology?

Very easy to say Charlie Parker of course. But then There's co-authorship with Benny Harris...

Add to this that David Baker wrote that Harris had full authorship, and it becomes a less simple question.

So: who wrote Ornithology?

More comments have come in about authorship of Ornithology: https://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/status/day/2013-11-12

New music! This is a rough-and-ready recording...

Uni today, but but tomorrow: Andy Champion, Ntshuks Bonga and I get together in a room. Extremely excited.

The first time I played for Jazz North East was with Alexander Hawkins: https://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/rambles/1346680672

I'd been there the week before though, for Schmazz:

First time I met Mat Maneri and Andy Champion was through Jazz North East.

The trio I'm recording with today started because of the Splinter festival:

And JNE also put together the quartet I'm going with to London Jazz Festival :

It's unlikely that I'm the only musician who can speak of Jazz North East as a strong developing force for our scene.

Wow. The session with Andy Champion and Ntshuks Bonga yesterday was monumental. So much great music was played...

... cannot wait for people to hear it. It's not up to me, so who knows? It might even be on a label [heh].

If you didn't know [and there seems to be far too many people who don't know] Ntshuks Bonga is a master of the saxophone.

The room we were in—Paper Stone Studios—had a beautiful acoustic. It was the top part of a converted Victorian cinema.

On Twitter, I'd lamented about hard panning of vibes. But Paper Stone Studios avoided that with no prompting. Sensitive.

I'm still thinking [a bit] about Ornithology today. Yesterday unearthed an interesting recording by Don Byas and Benny Harris.

But—because the music is far too good to relegated to a comment:

Rough transcription of Benny Harris' solo on How High The Moon, compared to Ornithology.

I don't think I've listened to so much be-bop before.

Admittedly, it was the same song, but still.

Yesterday's non-essential yet essential purchase.

yay!

Derby: don't forget Chris Biscoe & Roger Turner are heading our way... http://2ndline.coreymwamba.co.uk/biscoe-turner-mwamba

Right. LONDON. See you for jazz/improv later? https://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/gig/general-1384891200

My drinking buddy and I are at The Jolly Butchers in Stoke Newington. yum.

Tonight: me, Rachel Musson, Tony Bevan, Wilkinson/Noble/Edwards: https://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/gig/general-1384891200. Hope to see you!

What a great night! Really inspiring to play with Rachel Musson: with luck it will happen again!

Why do lead sheets for Coltrane's Satellite show minor third-perfect fourth movements where you can hear descending whole-tone movement?

Just in case you've not heard Satellite before:

If you know the answer to my Coltrane question, let me know here: https://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/status/day/2013-11-21

Satellite, Giant Steps and How High The Moon, stacked together:

Does anyone know when Coltrane wrote [not recorded] Giant Steps?

Today is The Day of The Missing Organisers. How could I have forgotten?

Derby. :-)

Tomorrow: Chris Biscoe and Roger Turner hit Derby, and I get to work with them! http://2ndline.coreymwamba.co.uk/biscoe-turner-mwamba

I was about to write a Sherrineqsue piece about London Jazz Festival, but stopped. Suffice to say, I saw many people and it was fun.

Today's listening:

Saving my back has now become a priority.

And it also means that playing in Scotland might be easier than I previously thought. :)

Right. To Leicester, for a meeting. Going to be sick of seeing the train station by the end of the year.

I'm really excited about the gig today. These guys are legends.

Remember first hearing Roger Turner with Konk Pack; and Chris Biscoe in... well, all sorts of things!

Hearing them both in the great acoustic of Voicebox Arts Centre will be a special treat.

In other news, had a good chat with Robert Mitchell yesterday. And who knows where that will lead? :)

Here's me and Robert on my "love and loss" song, Bereft:

Having a "no Corey, that isn't right either" day.

I'm mainly saying this to myself. Which isn't really right either.

Tickets for tonight! *

Biscoe and Turner are here, and sounding great in the space!

That was a roast! Chris Biscoe and Roger Turner were astoundingly good.

The relief my back feels at not having to take the vibes to the train station.

walked into pub; Paul Bream about to order pint. Coincidence? Or evidence of telepathy?

I'm in Glasgow! The gig at ^{Sage Gateshead} was a blast, looking forward to tomorrow!
