Hello there! Very tired and just got in, so this is a quickie. My fantastic trio of interchangeable names has a new mini-site: have a look and let me know what you think!

19th Jan 10

Hello there. I'm currently going through all the recordings we got for the tour. I'm very happy with all of them. You can listen to one if you subscribe to the podcast, but there will be more coming in due course...

Other than that, things have been ticking along fine [well other than the coding hassles...]. Finally settling into the new place - my office is a mess already. I'll be off again next week, to rehearse Arun's score for a silent film. Then to thinking about more gigs for the three!

29th Jan 10

Although things were really quite interesting a few weeks ago, it has to be said that this month's been despicably quiet.

I've been doing lots of experimenting with microformats in an effort to keep my brain from rotting: and had an extremely pleasant time jamming and chatting with Mr Hawkins. Oh, and looking for places for the trio to play. But other than that... there have been no thrills. But maybe that's what summers should be like; a chance to relax in relative warmth, catch up with people and live a little. I can't really complain as it's been nice: and the madness is sure to start up again in the autumn...

30th Jan 10

The trio is now on Bandcamp! You can listen and buy using their widgets on the sounds page. Hope you like!

15th Feb 10

A gentle day after the London excursion: currently in the process of uploading the latest trio recording for download, and writing out the maps for Arun and Ntshuks for Mulungushi which we'll play on Saturday. Might even head out into fresh air today!

Thanks to everyone who came out to hear us at Manchester Jazz Festival - we had a great time!! And Nick Malcolm - there's a name to check out, some lyrical trumpet and fantastic writing. Going to hear the Blink trio today.

I'm sitting, watching the day brighten; and my mind wanders to Keith Jarrett. I'm not a fan of the trio, but I find the early quartets with Jan Gabarek and Dewey Redman stunning: and I think this full-length programme of him, the buttery-toned Lloyd, Ron McClure and Sir DeJohnette shows just what a giant of music he is.

Today will be an odd day. It's my last session at the Arts Cafe for the Everybody's Reading project I've been doing with visual artist Sue Clews, Tim Sayers and Lydia Towsey - not as a poet this time but as Arts-in-Health co-ordinator for the NHS.

I've spent the last nine weeks listening closely and watching as people interact and engage with books, each other and themselves. This process was at the heart of the piece I was commissioned to create for the Festival. Since working on Heralds - and that's longer than most people would think - I've been moving towards making map-like scores and "scripts" for the music I want to hear. The older versions of my maps were very directed and quite prescriptive; so there would be a flow from start to finish; the musician was guided to the end point with descriptions as to what I wanted to hear as the writer.

But in this case I was writing for the trio. This is something I have never really had to do, since we neither play "tunes" nor rehearse. We just turn up and create music, through listening and awareness of our environment. So it was a matter of balancing the openness of the group with my intentions for the piece. So I decided to modify process I used on myself for Popular Delusions and Songs for the New Folk, which is more based on emotions and what is said rather than what I think. This is a Flickr set of the score, about 75% finished.

So many "thank yous"... to all who came to Leicester, for a start - this was a new thing for the trio, actually performing a composition, AND at that length...

AND to Nottingham for the Framework Raise The Roof Festival. It was tricky listening with the DJing in the next room, but we put our souls into it. Good to see Nat Birchall, Gavin Barras, Rachael Gladwin and Matt Halsall, as well as a good chat/catch up with Julian Siegel.

Hello! Can I convince anyone to help fund a album by the gorgeous openness that is Corey Mwamba | Dave Kane | Joshua Blackmore?

We're going to ACTUALLY RECORD a proper album next year - and I'm aiming for a deadline of March to release.

Embrace Arts in Leicester has kindly donated their acoustically stunning concert hall to do the recording. The hall has a perfect balance of sound, even at the lowest volumes! It's very exciting...

But we'd really appreciate your help in making it happen. We know times are hard, so we're trying to keep the effort required low. I'm not setting a limit to raise - every little helps and we're very grateful for the help!

All you have to do is buy one [or more] of the current trio downloads, at more than the lowest price (£3!); and share that link with your friends so that they buy it too. It's as simple as that!

If you buy all four albums, I'll put you down for a free physical copy of the new album [which will have your name in the acknowledgements], signed; as well as a free download of the album.

So head to the link and grab some open living music! Thanks very much to everyone that supports us!

I'm doing some background tinkering - yes, I'm bored of the site style again. So another change is due. You know things are bad when the most relaxing thing you can do is CSS.

I'm still driving towards an album for the trio, and trying to enthuse people to meet on Thursday about the arts in Derby. So if it all goes a bit quiet, I apologise! But rest assured, I'm busy...

Most of my activity is around removing my dislike for Flash. What this means is I can now have Bandcamp embedding, which also means that you will be able to download all of my albums, once I've uploaded them. I'm going to keep the price low: you'll help fund the trio album too. Thanks to all who buy!

The other change that might occur is the retirement of my SVG audio widget for the podcast. I'm thinking of replacing it with Soundcloud's excellent HTML5 custom player, which looks much nicer than the HTML5 standard controls and will allow me to share music I find too!

If you want to have a look at the "new look" in progress, head over here.

Here's most of the the gig the trio did for Everybody's Reading in October! Have a wonderful holiday if you're having one.

15th Jan 12

Sorry for all of this - I'm pretty sure I've cracked it...

Anyway, I haven't been up to much, just lots of writing at the piano for @[the trio] recording; and coding. All very dull. Might add cognizance to the main menu, so it's easier to find: but it doesn't get more interesting than that!

20th Jan 12

Another morning... another test post to Facebook. Writing for the trio recording is going well: and preparing for the gig with Alex Hawkins and Dave Kane in Leeds!

20th Jan 12

Just a reminder - if you'd like to get a credit on the upcoming trio recording as well as the recording itself for free, please head over to my shop - http://www.coreymwamba.co.uk/getmusic - and pick up all four trio recordings!

24th Jan 12

Anyway, today: a wet morning, spent indoors. I have some more writing to do for the trio album - there are a few things left to do for a couple of the songs, but it's shaping up nicely. Then some prep for Leeds on Sunday!

26th Jan 12

In case you weren't aware - still raising funds for the recording with @[Dave Kane] and @[Joshua Blackmore] - just head to my shop and download all four trio recordings to get a credit on the album and a free copy when it ships!

Luckily I have very little to do later. Researching the Mabinogion for a possible new story-telling project; and of course, reading more stories for @[the trio] recording.

28th Jan 12

This coming Sunday: in Leeds. Very excited about this one - two friends who [I think] have never played together before... but I have a very good feeling about this! Last time I played in @[Alexander Hawkins]' band it was a complete roast: he's a fabulous musician. Here's a video of that time, in Newcastle...

A simple rendition of one of the pieces I'm writing for the trio album. Hope you like!

7th Feb 12

What a jam-packed weekend! The gig with @[Nat Birchall] at Pizza Express was great - @[Arun Ghosh] played on a tune, and there were some really magical moments from all in the band. Lovely. My mood was slightly soured by the staff constantly switching off the lights as I tried to pack away: and then I topped it all off by an always eventful night at Ronnie Scott's, and losing my hat. The snow didn't impede my progress that much; it just made everything very much slower...

I'm still preparing things for One Note Sunday and of course the trio album; so no real rest. But I've also been adding things to cognizance which has kept me really busy - take a look!!

10th Feb 12

In Derby tonight at Deda! Come hear me play a Roy Ayers tune for the first time in my life, with George Grignon's excellent SoulDeep band. Finally recovered from the lovely soufulness of @[Nat Birchall]'s gig, and concentrating on writing out parts for @[the trio] album... March is looming!!

10th Feb 12

And - because it failed once again - I'll try it again. Except this time I'll talk about something within the message. Feeling slightly unwell today - not sure if it's something I ate, as I had a quiet night in, but feeling very unsettled. After this relentless coding, I'm going to spend more time on @[the trio] scripts - the scores are pretty much done, but creating parts from the full score is the tricky part.

15th Mar 12

Not long until the album recording for @[the trio]: very exciting! This is a bit last minute - but I'm in London tomorrow at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, playing with @[Arun Ghosh], Neil Charles and Cerys Mathews. Maybe see you there?

I'm currently listening to some of the first mixes of the trio recording.

Although I'm very good at listening to music, I am not necessarily good at listening to production - but there is such amazing clarity in the sound. Chris Trent is a marvel!

What's striking me is the mood that's created from each piece - for the recording we talked more than we have done in three years of gigs, and though this did in fact make me quite jittery at the time [I felt we were worrying about things outside of the music we create more than the music itself] the music itself is full of emotion and life; which [of course] is the point.

There's still more to come - I think the next month's going to be full of tough decisions..!

26th Apr 12

I'd totally forgotten to share this - a lovely review on FD2D.com for the trio's last gig at Embrace Arts.

26th Apr 12

A simple rendition of one of the pieces I'm writing for the trio album. Hope you like!

4th May 12

Here's a first - a REHEARSAL. Pianist Adam Fairhall's putting together a new trio with me and drummer Rob Turner. Exciting...!

15th May 12

I'm looking for a ghost story for some music the trio has made.

No one's heard the music yet; but I'm thinking of setting it to a ghost-related narrative. If anyone is interested, please let me know in the comments; or contact me.

10th Jun 12

Got some tunes of pianist Adam Fairhall's to work through - trio rehearsal next week, with Rob Turner on drums.

27th Aug 12

Just dragging my head up from the Orrery to go through autumn, which has become VERY crowded as usual. After the gig with Robert, I\'m almost salivating in anticipation at a scheduled recording session with Adam Fairhall and the fantastic Paul Hession; the new album for the trio is just around the corner and a whole heap of things for next year, including a highly exciting quartet with Chris Sharkey, Mark Sanders and Andy Champion; and plans for a trip abroad...

1st Oct 12

Up early - stuff to do! But this evening - Lydia\'s show, Reading The Body! If you can make it down, I think it will be a special night... this begins a whole sequence of gigs, of course since tomorrow I\'m in Manchester and the day after that I\'m recording for Martin Archer. Conserving my strength...

2nd Oct 12

What a lovely night for Lydia\'s gig yesterday! If you came along you can leave a comment on the gig\'s page.

But today - off to Manchester for a play with @[Dave Kane] and Chris Sharkey!

don\'t overthink it has arrived. I\'ll try to get the orders out as soon as I can - off to Liverpool tomorrow so a slight delay, but still. IT IS HERE. And it\'s already got a lovely review courtesy of All About Jazz. Go get it!

Really nice to have two tracks from don\'t overthink it featured on Mystery Lesson, a great show of improv, noise and other exciting musical happenings put together by the writer Daniel Spicer. The love for the new recording has been really humbling.

I\'ve been staring at the screen for hours now, trying to write about the music we played. But - I can\'t. I spoke briefly about the cathartic element of it the other day: After the gig, I felt I\'d had a lot of darkness and distress burned from me, and able to laugh again.

As with all the trio recordings, here is the entire gig. As they\'re all improvised, none of the songs has a name, although tradition cycle IV is Milt Jackson-played-this-tune-fest, nodding to The Golden Striker by John Lewis, John Brown\'s Body [played by Milt Jackson and Oscar Peterson on Very Tall] and Criss Cross by Thelonious Monk. Hope you like it.

I'm looking for a ghost story for some music the trio has made.

I noticed that @[Dave Kane] and Calum Gourlay were talking about Scott LafFaro; so I thought I'd do a search and dug up this. Several things to pin on the wall in this fascinating interview, that resonate with me in terms of thinking about music, practice and the trio.

30th Jun 13

The gig with Lê Quan Ninh and Paul Dunmall was beautiful! We started with me, @[Dave Kane] and Paul in a trio; Paul always sounds phenomenal, but this was only the second time I'd played with him - and the first time up-close, so it was real treat. After us, Chris Sharkey and Matthew Bourne treated us to a fantastic cello and acoustic guitar duo. To top it all, Ninh's set was absorbing: using a large bass drum as a sound surface, he made it sing, resonate and thunder with various sticks, gongs and found objects.

The second half started with Ninh and Matthew [on a sweet couple of Moogs] in a short duo, and then the rest of us chipped in. So good to be making that kind of music - many thanks to Fusebox for asking me down!

15th Sep 13

I might still do something for the gig pages though. I've had some nice comments about the single-sheet gig pages for the trio mini-site and I'm wondering about doing a similar format.

26th Sep 13

Love the flow of this session.

Just read about the passing of Karl Berger. a career spent opening up music for all through the Creative Music Studio, but also one of the finest of vibists. His trio with Dave Holland and Ed Blackwell was formative.
