Absolutely miserable and misguided decision by Arts Council England in the North: Jazz North East's bid for funding its activities was rejected. Anyone who knows about the scene knows the great miracles in adventurous music programming that Paul Bream, Russell, Diane and the everyone else perform. I can only hope that someone up there realises they pressed the reject button by mistake and overturns it—with the work and legacy that Jazz North East has produced, it can only be a mistake. And if it was intentioned, then that intention can only have come from ill will—Jazz North East has done and is doing transformative work. I can only hope its strong audience base step out and support it in its hour of need.
