Just noting that a couple of good books have passed my eyes. The first is Joe Morris' Perpetual frontier: the properties of free music. It's a carefully written, skilful ontology of practices in improvised music and should be required reading on any decent jazz studies course. The second is Derek Styles' Peace thru jazz: a bio-discography of Makanda Ken McIntyre, multi-instrumentalist, composer—educator. This is a lovingly researched work around a fascinating figure in the music and was inspiring!
Two good books
- previous: Try New Things!
- next: Threadgill, Moran, Cruz conversation
